About Our Name – Chasing 23

Most of our readers believe that “Chasing 23”, is an homage to Michael Jordan and while we certainly acknowledge Jordan as one of the greatest – if not the Greatest NBA Player of All Time – our name is in reality more of an indictment of today’s NBA . Nearly 8 years after his retirement, Michael Jordan’s legacy still hangs over the NBA like a cloud that cannot be escaped. We are still searching for the next “Greatest of All Time”, and still pining away for the days of yesteryear, when our perfect heroes were immune to the scrutiny of the internet rumors and world wide media exposure found in today’s sports society.

In many ways, we are still chasing after a legacy that has become urban legend – it’s as if Michael Jordan never missed a shot, when the fact is that even Jordan the player can never measure up to Michael Jordan the ICON.  As a result players such as Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, and Dwyane Wade will forever be cast in his shadow, fair or unfair. No matter what they do, they are condemned, since they are either trying too hard to be Jordan, or cultivating their own style that is not Jordan enough. Hence – the reason for our title: it is both a reality, as well as an indictment of the league in general. In a sense, we will always be Chasing 23, even if someone comes along that is in reality better, because of our propensity to hold on to our heroes, myths, and legends.
